【 The Return of a Classic! 】 The Panther is a tank which often appears in the discussion of the best 'overall' WWII German tanks in terms of firepower, armor and maneuverability. As the German Army thrust into the USSR from Summer of 1941, it came into contact with powerful Russian tanks such as the T34 and KV-1, and it became clear that although superior German tank tactics could carry the day for the time being, the Panzer III and IV tanks used at the time were no match for their Russian counterparts. In early 1942, the German Army went back to the drawing board, and came back with the Panzerkampfwagen V Panther, designed to exceed the T34 from which a significant portion of its design had been borrowed. Production of the Panther began in Spring 1942 and by mid-1943 it had begun to appear on the battlefield. Firepower was provided by an imposing 70-caliber 7.5cm gun, and the hull was characterized by extensive use of sloped armor plating which provided a significant defensive boost. The 700hp of the Maybach HL230 engine was double that of the engine in the Panzer IV, and this was used to propel the Panther at speeds of up to 55km/h. At 6,000 units produced, the Panther is second only to the Panzer IV in terms of production totals. The Panther A was a revised version of the Panther D, and it first entered production in Summer 1943.
